Thomas Keith Oates, 83, died on June 6, 2026. A devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather and loyal friend, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 10, at Aldersgate Global Methodist Church in Marion, with the Rev. James Slone presiding. Interment was held in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia on Thursday, June 11. Arrangements were entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, located at 900 North Court Street in Marion.
Born on Aug. 7, 1942, in Pana, to Forrest and Mabel Oates, Mr. Oates dedicated his life to his faith, family and community. A lifelong educator, he graduated from Nashville High School in 1960 and earned degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, culminating in a Ph.D. from SIUC.
His distinguished career in education spanned more than 40 years. He did his student teaching at Marion High School and then began as a science teacher at Rich East High School in 1965.He went on to serve as principal of North Greene High School in White Hall and Roodhouse, superintendent of Panhandle Community Unit School District and superintendent of Marion Unit 2 School District from 1985 until his retirement in 2002. Following retirement, he continued serving schools through educational consulting and financial oversight work. Throughout his career, he touched countless lives through his leadership, dedication and commitment to helping students, educators and communities thrive.
Mr. Oates’ commitment to service extended beyond his professional career. He was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church. He served as president of the Illinois Association of School Administrators and the Marion Rotary Club and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on the board of Care and Counsel Ministries, where he shared his leadership and faith in service to others.
He valued the simple joys of life and the relationships that enriched it. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, and nothing made him smile brighter than his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved fishing, golfing, traveling and enjoying a good card game with those he adored. He was always in the stands to cheer on his favorite sports teams, especially the Marion Wildcats. His encouragement, kindness and sense of humor created countless treasured memories for those fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered for his steadfast faith, warmth, friendship and the genuine interest he took in the lives of others. His legacy of love, integrity and generosity will endure through the many lives that he touched.
Mr. Oates is survived by his wife, Gloria, whom he married on Aug. 20, 1966, in Patoka; children, Keith (Sarah) Oates , Sara (Scott) Moore and Mark (Lyndsey) Oates; grandchildren, Delaney (Troy) Johnson, Zachary Oates, Caverly Oates, Aubrey Oates, Garrett Moore, Carter Moore, Grant Moore, Dylan Oates and Rylee Oates; and great-grandchildren, Margot Johnson and Nolan Johnson, children of Delaney and Troy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Mabel Oates.
Memorials may be made to The Thomas K. Oates Foundation Scholarship, payable to “Marion Unit 2 Foundation.” Those donating to the scholarship are asked to indicate Thomas K. Oates Scholarship in the memo line of the check. Memorials may also be made to the “Wildcat Way,” a foundation that serves Marion Unit 2 students in need.
