Timothy Nelson Dies In Palmyra Plane Crash


A Carlinville man perished in a plane crash on Saturday afternoon, May 2, about one-half mile south of Zelmer Memorial Airport near Palmyra.

Macoupin County Coroner Brad Targhetta responded to the scene of a single-engine, two-seat 1996 Yakoviev Yak-52 airplane accident at 4:03 p.m. The call was reported to Macoupin County 911.

Targhetta said Timothy Nelson, age 61, of Carlinville, was pronounced dead at the scene, and had been the only one on board the aircraft. Nelson is the husband of Stephanie Broom Nelson, owner of Nelson Audiology in Litchfield.

Davis Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville is handling the arrangements, and an obituary for Nelson appears in today’s edition.

The Macoupin County Sheriff’s office and the FAA are investigating the incident. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, May 4.
