Toppers First At Morrisonville Tourney

Posted

After starting the season 5-7, the Hillsboro volleyball team has been on a tear as of late. Winners of their last eight games, including key conference wins over Roxana and Greenville, the Lady Hiltoppers hit a high note on Saturday with a two set victory over Taylorville's JV squad to capture the championship of the Morrisonville Tournament.

Like the Toppers, the Junior Tornadoes had been 4-0 in pool play going into the championship tilt, with wins over solid Lincolnwood and Roxana teams. But Hillsboro would make short work of the younger squad, defeating them 25-11 and 25-14 to earn the crown.

Kaci Papin would have ten kills in the win over the Tornadoes, her third double digit kill game of the tournament. In the five games at Morrisonville, Papin would put down 44 kills, good enough to earn her a spot on this year's all-tournament team.

Papin would be joined on the attack by Kayli Ward, who had six kills, giving her 36 for the tournament, while Jordan Jacobs, Reagan DeVaisher and Chloe Beck split setting duties. Jacobs would lead the team with seven assists, while DeVaisher and Beck had six and five respectively.

Defensively, Emily Reynolds and Ward would have six digs each, while DeVaisher and Haley Major added five digs apiece. Major, Emma Miller and Beck all had one block in the win as well.

Hillsboro served up eight aces in the match, with Ally Devore posting four and Ward and Beck contributing two apiece. The trio led the team in points as well, with Ward collecting 12, Devore with nine and Beck with eight.

Pool Play

The Toppers made it to the championship game after going 4-0 in pool play. Three of those wins came on Wednesday, Oct. 2, against Morrisonville, Edinburg and Bunker Hill.

The Toppers dispatched Morrisonville in game one by a 25-17, 25-3 final score. Kaci Papin had 12 kills in the victory, with Jordan Jacobs and Reagan DeVaisher sharing setting duties with 12 assists combined. Chloe Beck served up nine points, including three aces, and led the team in blocks with two. Emily Reynolds also contributed on defense with a team-best six digs.

Reynolds would have the hot hand on the serving line in game two as the Toppers defeated Edinburg 25-13, 25-23. Reynolds served up ten points, including an ace, and led the team in digs again with six. Kayli Ward put down 13 digs, while Jordan Jacobs had 11 assists in the win.

In their final game on Wednesday, Hillsboro downed Bunker Hill 25-18, 25-15. The Toppers had a balanced attack, with Ward putting down eight kills and Papin adding six, with DeVaisher and Jacobs assisting on 13 of Hillsboro’s 20 kills. The serving game was the same, with Maria Hernandez leading the team with six, while DeVaisher and Reynolds added five each. Defensively, Haley Major had two blocks, while Ally Devore led the team in digs with eight.

The fourth pool play win came Saturday morning as they defeated Mulberry Grove 25-18, 25-9 to advance to the championship game.

Papin reached double digit kills again with 11, while Jacobs and DeVaisher served up 16 assists. On the actual service line, Beck led the team with ten points, with two aces, while Ward had seven points and five aces.

Defensively, Devore and Hernandez combined for 13 digs, while Major and Paige Roemelin had a block apiece.

Hillsboro, now 13-7, will take on Lincolnwood in their Volley for Grace game on Monday, Oct. 7, with a bake sale planned to raise funds for INAD research in honor of Hillsboro eight-year-old Grace Herschelman. The Toppers will take on Gillespie on Thursday, Oct. 10, with hopes of improving on their 3-1 South Central Conference mark.

Lady Hiltoppers Score Rare Win Over Greenville

A four season losing streak to the Greenville Comets came to an end on Thursday, Oct. 3, as the Hillsboro volleyball team knocked off the Comets in Bond County.

The Toppers would eek out a 25-23 victory in set number one, but were hammered by the Comets 25-12 in set two. The loss was just a momentary blip though as Hillsboro returned the favor with a convincing 25-14 win in the third set to pick up their tenth win of the season.

Kayli Ward came up big on the service line and at the net for Hillsboro as she led the team with 15 service points, including six aces, and reached double digits in kills with ten. Ward also had two of Hillsboro’s seven blocks in the game, with Kaci Papin and Emma Miller also getting two blocks each and Haley Major adding one.

Papin would also be a key piece to the puzzle with a team-best 13 kills. Major and Chloe Beck also added two kills apiece, while Reagan DeVashier and Jordan Jacobs led the setting with ten and nine assists respectively.

Major would lead the team in digs with three, while Ally Devore added two digs and eight service points. Beck also had seven points and two aces for the Toppers.

Hillsboro will take on Lincolnwood in their Volley for Grace game on Monday, Oct. 7, with a bake sale planned to raise funds for INAD research in honor of Hillsboro's eight-year-old Grace Herschelman. The Toppers will take on Gillespie on Thursday, Oct. 10, with hopes of improving on their 3-1 South Central Conference mark.
