It was about as close as you could get for an early season golf match on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Litchfield Country Club.
Just 16 strokes separated first from 18th at the triangular, with the difference between first and third in the team standings a mere six strokes.
With plenty of new faces on both Montgomery County teams, Hillsboro held off Litchfield on the Panthers’ home course by a 167 to 172 final score. Williamsville would be right behind the two rivals as they shot a 173 to finish third.
Appropriately enough, Hillsboro and Litchfield shared the top individual spot as both Dom Haggard and Tug Schwab shot 3-over-par 38s to earn co-medalist honors.
Haggard, one of the few Hillsboro players with varsity experience, paced the Toppers, who improved to 3-1 on the season. Drake Vogel would add in a 41, while Preston Lyerla finished with a 42.
Tad Daniels and Devin Speiser tied for the fourth scoring round with a 46, while Dillon Smail finished with a 48.
Schwab was one of three freshmen to post scoring rounds for Litchfield. Ian Otto would be the Panthers’ number two with a 42, while AJ Odle was fourth on the squad with a 48. Junior Ryan Baugher had the other LHS scoring round with a 44.
Zach Boston and Allen Schneider, who gained varsity experience last year with the Purple Panthers, added in scores of 49 and 51 in Litchfield’s first match of the season.
The two county foes will meet twice more in the regular season, with the next time coming on Sept. 22, at the Hillsboro Country Club.
