Toppers, Lancers Kick Off 2nd T. Todt Shootout

It was only appropriate that the second edition of the T. Todt Shootout tipped off with two schools near and dear to the the late broadcaster’s heart on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The girls basketball teams from Lincolnwood, Terry Todt’s alma mater, and Hillsboro, whose state title run in 2006 was broadcast to thousands by Todt on WSMI, played in the 9:30 a.m. game at the Woodshed in Raymond, kicking off a full day of basketball in honor of the man who gave so much to his community.

In the game itself, the Toppers, one of the most successful area programs of the last 20 years, defeated the first-year Lincolnwood program 54-11, but the effort on both sides would have made Todt proud.

Hillsboro got hot early and never cooled down, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. Maddy Rupert hit a pair of threes for six of her eight points, while Shelby Houchlei also hit a three and finished with seven points in the quarter.

Lincolnwood trailed by 18 after the opening frame, with a basket by Cassie Krager and a free throw by Avery Pope accounting for their three points.

The Lancers would have their most successful quarter of the game in the second, with Maggie McClelland putting in four points, followed by Cora Stevens with two, but Hillsboro answered with 17 points spread between eight different players, including Vanessa Compton with four.

Up 38-9 at the half, Hillsboro outscored the Lancers 12-2 in the third and 4-0 in an abbreiviated fourth quarter to finish off the victory.

Maddy Rupert would lead all scorers with 13, while Claire Tester added 12, six of which came in the third quarter.

All nine players who dressed on Saturday would score for Hillsboro, with Nikya Harston and Shelby Houchlei going for eight and seven respectively, followed by Layne Rupert and Vanessa Compton with four each and Haley Major, Emily Reynolds and Emma Miller with two apiece.

The Lancers were led by Maggie McClelland with four, followed by Avery Pope with three and Cassie Krager and Cora Stevens with two apiece.

Hillsboro will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 16, as they travel to Staunton to face the Bulldogs, while Lincolnwood will host Tri-City on Dec. 16 as well, followed by a road trip to Palmyra to play Greenfield-Northwestern on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
