Hillsboro senior Nic Ondrey was one of 15 players selected by the boys basketball coaches of the South Central Conference for a spot on this year’s all-conference teams.
Ondrey, a second team selection, led Hillsboro in points with 14.7 per game and was second in rebounds with 5.6 per contest. He also led the team in blocks (32) and was second in two-point field goal percentage, making 152 of his 322 attempts for a 47.2 percent clip.
Seniors took three of the five spots on the first team as Pana’s Jonah Lauff, Staunton’s Ethan Booth and Vandalia’s Garrett Austin earned recognition. Juniors made up the rest of the squad, with Roxana’s Gavin Huffman andPana’s Andrew Ambrose rounding out the list.
Huffman was also an all-conference pick as a sophomore (first team) and a freshman (third team), while Booth was also a first team selection last year as a junior. Lauff made a return to the all-conference list as well, having earned third team honors as a sophomore in the 2017-18 season.
Joining Ondrey on the second team were fellow seniors Michael Byots of Carlinville, Jacob Golenor of Roxana and Anthony Kravanya of Gillespie, plus Greenville junior Fletcher Manhart. Kravanya was a third team pick last season.
On the third team, Vandalia senior Matthew Wells and Pana senior Bryce Edmiston were joined by juniors Addis Moore of Southwestern and Andrew Beckham of Roxana and sophomore Jack Schaufelberger of Greenville. Moore and Beckham were also all-conference selections last year on the first and third teams respectively.
Roxana and Pana, who would have three representatives each on the teams, would share this year’s championship, both going 8-1. The Shells last won the South Central in 2012-13, when they posted a 9-0 record, while Pana’s last conference title came when the SCC was split into two divisions, with the Panthers finishing 6-1 to take the East.
Greenville, who had won the last two titles, was tied for third with Vandalia, both at 7-2, with Staunton fifth at 5-4 and Gillespie and Hillsboro tied for sixth at 3-6. Carlinville and Litchfield were both 2-7 to tie for eighth, while Southwestern finished tenth at 0-9.
