Toppers Split Home Matches

Posted

So far this season, the Hillsboro boys golf team has ten victories and just three losses, all coming from the Vandals of Vandalia. And while the visitors from Fayette County have had the Toppers’ number this year, all three matches have been close, decided by an average of less than eight strokes, giving Hillsboro hope when the two teams meet up again at the South Central Conference Tournament on Sept. 29.

The latest meeting between the Vandals and Toppers happened on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with Vandalia taking a 164 to 171 win over the home team at the Hillsboro Country Club.

Chase Laack led the Vandals, who improved to 15-0 with the win. Laack was lights out once again as he shot a 3-under-par 33, shaving six strokes off his score from Aug. 20, when Vandalia beat Hillsboro 164 to 167. Conner McCall also shot a 40 for Vandalia, who had the top two individual scores.

Hillsboro was led by the tandem of Dom Haggard and Drake Vogel, who each shot 41 on the day. Tad Daniels would be three strokes behind his teammates with a 44, while Devin Speiser added a 45.

Dillon Smail (47), Preston Lyerla (53) and Shaw Riggs (52) also played on Tuesday for the Toppers.

The narrow loss came after two decisive wins on Monday, Sept. 14, where the Toppers defeated Pana and Roxana by 27 strokes each. Playing at the Hillsboro Country Club once again, the Toppers would shoot a 170, while the visiting Shells and Panthers carded rounds of 197 each.

Dom Haggard led Hillsboro in the wins, shooting a 4-over 40 on the day, but just five strokes separated the Toppers’ top five.

Tad Daniels contributed a 42, with Drake Vogel adding a 43. Both Preston Lyerla and Dillon Smail chipped in 45s for HHS, with Devin Speiser shooting a 51 in the sixth slot.

Hillsboro will have one more opportunity to add to their win total before the conference tournament at Indian Springs on Sept. 29. On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Toppers will host Carlinville, Litchfield and Mt. Olive at the Hillsboro Country Club, with hopes of going into the SCC clash with momentum.
