The Hillsboro varsity basketball team opened the Kaskaskian Classic in Carlyle Saturday afternoon, Nov. 27, in resounding fashion with a 57-42 defeat of the Woodlawn Cardinals to give Coach Kyle McBrain his first win as the head coach of his alma mater’s basketball program. The Toppers were ahead wire to wire in their second game of the season; it was the Cardinal’s initial appearance.
The Hillsboro defense seemed quicker, especially to double-team, than they were in their overtime loss to Rochester on Nov. 23; shooting percentages were also higher, Drake Vogel scored the first four points of the game; it was 19-7 with 4:29 left in the first half as the Cardinals seemed unsure of themselves (for many it was their first varsity action as only one senior was on their roster; he, one junior, and three sophomores start).
Vogel and Gavin Matoush were the only Toppers to score in the second quarter, but each had seven then and were in double figures by halftime to build a 26-13 lead. The Cardinals, led by 6’4’’ sophomore Chance Phelps, found their game legs in the third quarter; Phelps, an impressive athlete, ended with 22 points for the game, tying Vogel for game high. Still, five Toppers scored in that third quarter to keep the Cardinals behind 39-32 entering the final eight minutes.
Ninety seconds after the last quarter began the result was no longer in doubt as Blaze Helton made one of his reverse lay-ups to key a 9-0 Topper run. The lead was 16. Hillsboro was outscored by the Cardinals 8-7 over the last six minutes as defense came to the forefront again.
The Cardinals made no threes; Hillsboro had four, two by Vogel and one each by Matoush and Blaine Stewart. Hillsboro was 19 of 34 (.558) inside the arc; their four makes from behind the arc required 15 shots for a 27% rate. Overall, the field goal percentage was 49% (Compare that to the 36% made at Rochester).
Vogel had 8 rebounds, an assist, two steals, and a block to fill out his stats line. Bryce Connor came off the bench to nab six rebounds to tie Matoush in that category while Helton had five. Helton and Will Christian each had three assists; Helton had the most steals with three.
Pool play continues tonight, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. when Hillsboro faces the Flora Wolves. Wednesday, Dec. 1, they finish pool play against the host Carlyle Indians.
