The Hillsboro Hiltoppers finished second in a loaded field at the Gary Saunders Invite in Macomb on Saturday, Aug. 24, just one stroke behind the home team.
The Toppers would shoot a 316 on the day to finish in the runner-up spot to the Bombers. Bloomington Central Catholic was third with a 329, followed by Bloomington High School (339) and Effingham St. Anthony (346).
Alex Eickhoff led Hillsboro with a 71, the top score by a senior at the tournament and second best score overall to Burlington sophomore Nate Spear. Eickhoff would shoot a 36 on the front nine and a 35 on the back half of the course to finish in the runner-up spot.
Alex White would finish seventh with a 77 after rounds of 38 and 39, while Dane Huber was tied for ninth with a 41 and a 42 for an 83 on the day. Hillsboro and Macomb were the only two teams with three players in the top 12.
Wilson Hamby would account for the fourth scoring round to finish in a tie for 16th with an 85, while Owen Malloy finished a stroke back with an 86. Gunnar Micnheimer also played for the Toppers, shooting a 100.
U of I Orange Course
The Toppers would follow that runner-up finish with another one as they finished second at the John Macek Invitational at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy.
Hillsboro would shoot a 324 on the day to finish second to Morton by three strokes. Bloomington (331) would be third behind medalist T.J. Barger, who shot a 68, Effingham St. Anthony (333) and Central (333) were fourth and fifth.
The Toppers had two players in the top four, with Alex White tying Collin Roche of Morton for second with a 75. Alex Eickhoff would be just a stroke behind his teammate with a 76 to finish in fourth.
Owen Malloy would finish tied for 21st with an 85, while Wilson Hamby was tied for 32nd with an 88.
Dane Huber and Gunnar Micnheimer would finish out the lineup for Hillsboro, with Huber finishing tied for 39th with a 91 and Micnheimer tying for 65th with a 100.
Hillsboro will be off until Sept. 3, when they take on Altamont and Pana at Oak Terrace.
