The Nokomis boys basketball game on Friday, Feb. 21, was about endings as the school celebrated the accomplishments of two legendary coaches, Head Coach Steve Kimbro and Assistant Coach Brian Pesko.
While the postgame was all about the coaches, the game itself belonged to the seniors on the Redskin roster as Carter Sabol and Alex Tosetti scored 47 points in a 61-27 romp over Edinburg to sew up Nokomis’ 20th win of the season.
After Sabol, Tosetti and Nick Mascher, who was unable to play due to injury, were honored with their parents for senior night, the Redskins went right to work, outscoring Edinburg 17-5 in the first quarter. Sabol would have eight points in the opening frame, while Tosetti added in five for the Redskins.
The pair continued to light up the nets in their final game at NHS as Tosetti put in seven more points, while Sabol added six to spark another 17-point quarter. As good as the offense was, the defense was even better, holding the Wildcats scoreless in the second quarter to make it 34-5 at the break.
Edinburg would figure some things out on the offensive end in the second half, hitting five threes and posting quarters of 14 and eight, but Nokomis continued to build on their lead.
Sabol added five more in the third to up his total to 19, while Tosetti scored six more to give himself 18. The senior sharpshooter would hit two more threes, giving him four for the game, and a two to finish with 26, while Sabol added two more for his 15th game of 20-points or more.
In addition to the 26 from Tosetti and the 21 from Sabol, Nokomis also got six points and seven rebounds from Jake Johnson, four from Evan Herpstreith and two each from Seth Johnson and Elijah Aumann. The victory secured Nokomis’ fifth straight 20-win season and Coach Kimbro’s 28th 20-win season in 39 years. At the end of the regular season, Sabol, Mascher and Tosetti’s four-year record as Redskins is 95-33.
