Tri-City Trips Up Mohawks At Lenz

After a week full of rainouts, the Morrisonville/Lincolnwood baseball team were finally able to make it back on the field on Thursday, May 2, as they took on Tri-City at Lenz Field in Jacksonville.

The Mohawks would see their record fall to 6-15 with a pair of losses to the Tornadoes on the artificial turf at Lenz Field by scores of 7-6 and 3-1.

In their opening game, Tri-City spoiled a strong start and a solid offensive game for the Mohawks to pick up the win.

Morrisonville picked up a pair of runs in the opening inning as Shawn Goebel singled and Dade Pitchford and Sam Herman hit back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0.

Two more runs would come in the second inning, with Grant Jones earning a walk after the leadoff batter struck out. Following another strikeout, during which Jones moved to second on a passed ball, Jhett Walker tripled to drive in Jones and make it a 3-0 ballgame. Walker would score moments later on a single by Skinner and the Mohawks were off to a hot start.

After two hitless innings to start the game, Skinner ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third as Tri-City scored two runs on an error and a double.

The Mohawks would get one of those runs back in the top of the fourth on a single by Skinner and Pitchford’s second double of the game, but Tri-City would tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth on three singles and a pair of walks.

Morrisonville would put together a two-out rally in the sixth inning to regain the lead, as Pitchford continued his stellar day with a triple that plated Shawn Goebel, who singled the at-bat before.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tri-City would get their leadoff man on with an error, but Skinner struck out the next batter for out number one. The Tornadoes would get a triple to tie the game, though, as Sam Herman came in for Skinner on the mound.

Herman would get the next two outs, but Tri-City scored the go-ahead run on a ground out to make it 7-6.

In their last chance at the plate, Morrisonville got a pair of singles from Jhadyn Walker and Isaac Ferrill, then a walk by Cole Sidwell to load the bases. Somehow, Tri-City would get out of the jam as Braden Campbell came on in relief for the Tornadoes. Campbell would strike out the next batter, then got Jhett Walker to ground into a double play to end the game.

Dade Pitchford would finish the game 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs as Lincolnwood outhit the Tornadoes 13-5 in the game. Andrew Skinner, Shawn Goebel and Isaac Ferrill would all have two hits apiece as well.

Offense would be at more of a premium in game two, with Tri-City outhitting the Mohawks 7-4. The Tornadoes would get all three of their runs in the first three innings as they scored once in the second and twice in the third.

Morrisonville would cut into the lead in the fourth inning when Jhadyn Walker scored on an inside the park home run, but the Mohawks only had one other base runner, on an error, in the final three innings.

In addition to Walker’s homer, Andrew Skinner had two hits and Shawn Goebel had one in the opening three innings.

Michael Jones and Wyatt Spurgeon split pitching duties, with Jones allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, while striking out five. Spurgeon would allow one run in the final four innings, striking out three batters along the way.

Morrisonville is scheduled to be at home on Monday, May 6, against Mt. Olive, followed by a home and home series against Springfield Lutheran/Calvary on Tuesday, May 7, at Morrisonville, and Thursday, May 9, in Springfield. The end of the regular season is scheduled for Friday, May 10, in Pana.
