Twelve boys and girls, ages 9-14, were crowned district champions of the 2020 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship held at the St. Louis Catholic School Parish Center in Nokomis on Saturday, Feb. 29. The contest was hosted by the Nokomis Knights of Columbus Council #2189.
The 9-year-old champions were Kaya Conner from Hillsboro and Maddix Hires from Litchfield. Albany Kindernay from Hillsboro was the 10-year-old girls’ champion and Owen Fuller from Coffeen was the winner of the 10-year-old boys’ division. In the 11-year-old bracket, Camryn Engelman from Nokomis was the girls’ champion and Bryce Coalson from Staunton was the boys’ champion.
Twelve-year-old winners in the girls’ and boys’ divisions were Kearstynn Davis from Hillsboro and Jackson Tuetken from Irving. The 13-year-old girls’ division was won by Ella Greenwood from Hillsboro and the boys’ by Kennedy DeWerff from Nokomis. Fourteen-year-old champions were Austin Thorton from Nokomis in the boys’ bracket and Kyra Kircher from Litchfield in the girls’. The contestants shot 25 free throws in the contest.
The winners will compete in the regional competition to be held at 10 a.m. on March 7, at Mater Dei High School in Breese, with an eye toward moving on to the state competition to be held at Glenwood Intermediate School in Chatham, on April 4.
