Two men face arson charges stemming from a house fire on Park Street in Hillsboro on Saturday evening, May 4.

Emanuel D. Welch, 22, of Royal Lakes, and Alphonso Anderson, 52, of Royal Lakes, were both taken into custody by the Macoupin County Sheriff's Office and transferred to Montgomery County Jail on charges of residential arson, after an investigation by the Hillsboro police and fire departments.

Firefighters were called to the rent house on Park Street at 10:20 p.m. May 4, and after the blaze was extinguished, investigators learned from eyewitnesses that the structure had been lit on fire, according to Hillsboro Police Chief Randy Leetham.

Witnesses provided a vehicle description, and investigators from the fire department and police department located the vehicle in Bunker Hill.  As the investigation continued, authorities learned that four individuals from Royal Lakes and Bunker Hill bought gasoline in Gillespie, then allegedly came to Hillsboro to light the Park Street house on fire.

Police obtained arrest warrants for Welch and Anderson, who were subsequently taken into custody with bond set at $150,000.
