The Lincolnwood High School softball team had the odd phenomenon of losing to Gillespie twice, despite playing the Miners just once this week.
The Lady Lancers fell to North Mac on Friday, April 26, with Panther pitcher Kayla Gillespie getting the "W" in the 11-3 win, then lost to Gillespie, the town, on Saturday, April 27, by a 7-2 final score.
On Friday, Lincolnwood would have some chances, pounding out eight hits, but weren't able to knock off the Panthers, who scored in six of the seven innings.
After a solo run in the first by North Mac, Lincolnwood evened the score with a double by Sidney Glick and an RBI single by Sadie Slightom. The Panthers would score two more in the second inning, but the Lancers would cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the third when Cassie Krager reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a passed ball and Slightom's second straight RBI single.
That would be Lincolnwood's last run until the seventh though, while North Mac scored solo runs in the fourth and sixth, with two runs in the fifth and four runs in the seventh to build up an 11-2 lead.
The Lancers would get one run back after a double by Katelyn Payne and an RBI ground out by Savannah Bowman, but couldn't cut further into the lead.
Both Sadie Slightom and Sidney Glick would have two hits in the game, while Marisa Webb and Sydney Herman handled pitching duties. Webb allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and six walks, striking out four along the way. Herman allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts in two and a third innings of work.
On Saturday, the Miners of Gillespie held Lincolnwood to just two hits as they pulled out a 7-2 victory.
Lincolnwood kept the game close for the better part of five innings, scoring the first run of the game when Brittney Slightom singled, took second on an error, made it to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Cassie Krager.
The Miners would rally to score twice in the bottom of the first, but couldn't add to their lead over the next three innings as the score still stood at 2-1 going into the fifth.
In their turn at the plate, Lincolnwood led off the inning with a walk by Sydney Herman, who moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a ground ball to short. Kyra Shull would drive in the Lancers' second run with another ground out as the score now stood at 2-2.
As they did in the first, Gillespie would answer the runs with more of their own, scoring three times on three hits and two walks to make it 5-2. The Miners would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and set down the Lancers in order in the final two innings to sew up the win.
Lincolnwood's only two hits of the game would come from Brittney Slightom in the first and Sadie Slightom in the fourth. Sydney Herman would pitch the first five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and four walks, with three strikeouts, while Sadie Slightom pitched the final frame, giving up two runs on two hits.
Now 5-16 on the season, Lincolnwood will have a busy week if it stays dry, with five games in five days. That streak starts on Monday, April 29, at home against Ramsey, followed by road games against Calvary in Springfield on Tuesday, April 30, and in Morrisonville on Wednesday, May 1.
