Two Killed In I-55 Accident Saturday

A couple from Texas died in an accident on Interstate 55, just north of Litchfield, in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 27.

Driver Luis Paulet, 49, and passenger Liz Alejo Mora de Paulet, 31, both of Carrollton, TX, were pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Randy Leetham.

According to Illinois State Police, the Paulets were in a 2003 Chevy van northbound on I-55 at 2:21 a.m. Saturday when their vehicle was sideswiped by a northbound 2007 Honda car driven by Caleb Countryman, 21, of Springfield.  The van left the roadway, overturned and ejected both the driver and the passenger.

The interstate was closed for about five and a half hours, according to state police, who responded along with the Litchfield Fire Department, Litchfield Police Department, Mt. Olive Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and Illinois Department of Transportation.

The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police traffic crash reconstruction unit.
