Two women from Hillsboro were killed in a head-on collision on Route 127 south of Raymond Thursday morning, May 16.
Samantha LaPradd, 23, and Valerie Sheldon, 39, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Randy Leetham.
Sheldon is the police chief for the village of Raymond. According to Mayor Dennis Held, she was off duty at the time of the crash.
"On behalf of village of Raymond officials, sympathies are extended to Sheldon's family and friends as they mourn her loss," Held said. "The village appreciates the support from other emergency responder agencies as they assist with police duties during this time."
LaPradd was driving a 2018 Chevy Equinox north on Route 127 just over a half mile south of the Raymond-Nokomis Blacktop, while Sheldon was driving a 2012 Ford Mustang southbound on Route 127. LaPradd's vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck Sheldon's car head-on, according to Illinois State Police. The accident occurred at 8:09 a.m.
LaPradd was a medical student at Midwest Technical Institute in Springfield, scheduled to graduate in two weeks.
The Raymond-Harvel Fire Department, Raymond-Harvel Ambulance, Hillsboro Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.
The Illinois State Police traffic crash reconstruction unit is continuing the investigation.
