The Litchfield boys golf team continued their consistently solid play on Wednesday, Sept. 9, with just six strokes separating the six varsity Panthers. Vandalia, unfortunately for Litchfield, was just as consistent, and even better on their home course at the Vandalia Country Club.
Looking for their first conference title since 2011, the Vandals continue to show that they will be the team to beat at the South Central Conference Tournament on Sept. 29, at Indian Springs Golf Course near Coffeen. Vandalia shot a 141 on Wednesday, taking medalist honors with Chase Laack’s 2-under-par 33, as they defeated Litchfield by 38 and Staunton by 54.
Despite the lopsided score, the Panthers played fairly well, with three players within ten strokes of par, and three more within 15.
Zach Boston would lead the pack of Panthers with an 8-over 43 on the day, one ahead of teammate Tug Schwab, who had been Litchfield’s top scorer three times already this season.
A.J. Odle continued the trend with a 45, one stroke behind Schwab, while Ryan Baugher added the fourth scoring round with a 47.
Cam Frerichs and Kelvin Dooley would be the Panthers’ fifth and sixth men, shooting a pair of 49s on the day.
While the Panthers were all in the 40s, Vandalia put four men in the 30s, with Dylan Halford (34), Conner McCall (36) and Jonah Beesley (38) joining Laack to improve to 12-0.
Litchfield starts the week at home against Carlinville, Southwestern and Lincolnwood on Monday, followed by a road trip to Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton to face the Bulldogs and Greenville on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
