Vandalia would pile on 14 hits as they would cruise to a 11-1 South Central Conference victory over Litchfield on Monday, May 6.
The Vandals' bats would be hot in this contest as they would not be a friendly guest to the home team. The Vandals would get their hits throughout the contest, putting a hit on the board in every inning but the fifth inning.
In the top of the first inning the Vandals would get a hold of freshman pitcher Blaine Stewart as they would put three runs on the board early in the contest. The three runs would come off of two hits, a walk and an error, putting the Purple Panthers in an early hole.
In the bottom half of the first inning, Brady Bishop would get the action going for Litchfield with a leadoff base hit. That would be the only baserunner in the inning for the Purple Panthers as the following three Litchfield batters would be retired.
Keeping the Vandals off the board in the second inning would be a positive for the Purple Panthers as they would look to carry that momentum gained into the bottom of the second inning.
Two quick walks for Litchfield would put two Purple Panthers on the base paths as both Jeremy Frazier and Blaine Stewart would collect the base on balls. Litchfield would look to be in business as they had two runners on the base paths with no outs, but a strikeout and a double play would close out the inning and keep the Purple Panthers off the scoreboard.
In the top of the third inning, the Vandals would increase their lead as they would connect on three hits, scoring two runs and giving the Vandals a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Litchfield would finally get on the scoreboard. Brady Bishop would collect his second hit in as many tries as he would single with one out. Bishop would not stay on the base paths long as he would be retired when the next batter hit into a fielder's choice. Jacob Frerichs would be the server of the fielder's choice as he would switch spots with Bishop on the base paths.
A base on balls for Billy Beckham would give the Purple Panthers two baserunners with two outs. Following Beckham's walk, Nick Braasch would load the bases as he would collect the second walk of the inning.
The third walk of the inning would be the third straight as the carousel of Purple Panthers continued around the base paths. Jeremy Frazier would collect the walk and would also pick up an RBI, scoring Jacob Frerichs to give the Purple Panthers their first run of the contest.
The Vandal pitcher would settle down following the third walk and would strike out the next Litchfield batter to end the inning. The lone run in the inning would narrow the Vandal lead to 5-1 after three innings.
Vandalia's offense would continue to be on fire in the last three innings of the contest. The Vandals would add six runs in those innings off of eight hits to give themselves an 11-1 lead.
With all the success on the visiting team's offensive side of the diamond, the home team would not be able to get much action going. After scoring a run in the first three innings, the Purple Panthers would be held scoreless in the final four and would only be able to collect two more hits in those innings. Brady Bishop would get one of the two hits, giving him a 3-3 performance, and Billy Beckham would grab the final hit of the contest.
The Vandals' offense in this contest would be too much for the Purple Panthers as Vandalia would walk away with an 11-1 victory.
Litchfield would also fall to Staunton by an 11-1 margin on Friday, May 10, as they were held to one hit by the combo of Cayden Silvester and Cy Cox. The Journal-News will have more on that game in the future.
Litchfield will start regional play on Monday, May 13, against the Vandals on Vandalia's home field. The winner of that game moves on to play Teutopolis on Wednesday, May 15, at the Greenville Regional.
