Verna E. Emerson, 77, of Coffeen, died on Friday, June 26, 2020, at her residence.

Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Toberman Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen is assisting the family.

Mrs. Emerson was born Feb. 27, 1943, in McAlester, OK, to Fred and Edith Lucille (Marr) Schutte. She married Drury Lee Emerson, Sr. in 1961, in Tacoma, WA, and he survives.

She graduated from high school and attended Lincoln Land Community College. During her career, she worked as a dietary cook at Hawthorne Lodge Nursing Home in Hillsboro for 40 years.

Mrs. Emerson was a member of Luck N Buck Saddle Club in Hillsboro, attended Grace Fellowship Church in Fillmore, and was part of the Famous Poet Society, where she won many awards.

Having raised Arabian horses, she had a passion for horses, along with all animals, poetry and being outside. She especially loved spending time with and being involved in her grandchildren’s lives.

Mrs. Emerson resided in McAlester, OK, Graham, WA, Raymond, Irving and Coffeen during her lifetime.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Drury L. (wife Sandra) Emerson, Jr. and Berdina (husband Terry) Malloy, both of Coffeen, and Jeff Emerson of Hillsboro; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, George and Fred Schutte.

Mrs. Emerson was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Edith Ann Lynch on Aug. 16, 2001; one brother; and one sister.
