Walter L. Harmer, 81

Walter Lee Harmer, 81, of Tucson, AZ, died on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, Dec. 10, beginning at 2 p.m. at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview, MN.

Mr. Harmer was born July 27, 1937, in Hillsboro, to Mitchell and Pauline Harmer. He married Norma, and she preceded him in death.

He studied chemistry at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, later receiving his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Iowa. Mr. Harmer and his wife met at a Lutheran church social in Iowa City and had been married for 50 years.

He was employed as a research chemist at 3M for 35 years, and was an active church member, volunteer and meteorologist. He participated in many book and critical thinking clubs, and enjoyed traveling, playing tennis and watching college softball and basketball.

Mr. Harmer is survived by his children, Melissa (George) and Richard (Christine); and his grandchildren, Nathan, Katrina and Alex.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Mitch and Dick Harmer.
