Weather Picture Perfect For Painter

Posted

The Litchfield Relays have been plagued by poor weather since the event was created, but on Friday, March 22, the weather was nearly perfect for this year's event as the Purple Panthers welcomed Pana, North Mac, Hillsboro, Greenville and Gillespie to town.

The Litchfield boys and girls would both finish fourth in their respective divisions, with the boys scoring 76 points to finish behind Pana (88), North Mac (82) and Hillsboro (80), while the girls scored 58 points to finish behind Gillespie (84), Pana (80) and North Mac (74).

For the boys, the day belonged to senior Sam Painter, who signed to play basketball for Illinois Wesleyan University just an hour before making his first attempt in the long jump. Painter would dominate the jumping events on Friday as he won the long jump with a mark of 21'0.75", the triple jump with a mark of 40'3.5" and the high jump with a mark of 5'4".

His individual success would help the Panthers to a first place finish in the high jump, where Cameron Crow and Austin Niehaus finished tied for third at 5'2", and to second and third place finishes in the long jump and triple jump respectively.

Litchfield would also collect two wins on the track, with the freshman/sophomore 4x400 team winning in a time of 4:00.0 and the distance medley (1200/400/800/1600) squad winning in a time of 12:22.

The ninth and tenth graders would also finish third in the 4x100 with a time of 52.6, while the varsity 4x400 team would place third with a time of 3:52.6. Litchfield had a solid outing in the 4x800 as well, taking the runner-up spot to Hillsboro with a time of 10:03.

The Litchfield girls would win their 4x800 competition, beating North Mac by more than a minute and a half. The Lady Panthers also won the distance medley in a time of 14:32, 1:35 quicker than second place Gillespie, and the 4x400 in a time of 4:47.0, beating North Mac by five seconds.

Off the track, Carson Lemon won the pole vault with a mark of 8'6", while Alivia Wyatt was third in the discus with a throw of 83'1".

Litchfield track will be in Pana on Tuesday, March 26, to face the host Panthers and Staunton.
