Where There's A Will: Carlile's Title One Of Five Medals For Panthers At PORTA

Five of the seven Litchfield High School wrestlers at this year’s Rex Avery Invitational at PORTA High School would medal as the Panthers finished seventh overall in the 25-team tournament.

The Panthers would take a first, a second, a third, a fifth and an eighth place finish at the meet, with junior Will Carlile taking home the championship at 132 pounds. Carlile would start off the tournament with two wins by fall over Eli Koenig of Warrensburg-Latham and Evan Ferguson of Riverton, followed by a tech fall victory over Brandon Parrish of Knoxville to advance to the championship. There he would take on Billy Tay of Colfax Ridgeview and dominated the match with a 13-1 victory.

Carter Powell also made it to the championship at 126, eventually finishing second to Coby Windle of Colfax Ridgeview in a 6-0 decision. Powell made it to the title match with wins by fall over Curtis Segrest of Hillsboro and Hugo Gil of Beardstown, followed by a 5-3 decision win over Blake Cagle of PORTA in the semifinals.

Carter’s younger brother Alex would finish third overall at 106 pounds, posting wins over Jaden Frainer of PORTA’s JV squad and Stella Narkiewicz of Monmouth-Roseville before losing to Payton Murphy of Deer Creek-Mackinaw in the semifinals. Powell would rebound in the third place match though, beating PORTA’s Justin Miller by fall in two minutes to take third.

Senior Jefferson Thomas also came back to win his first match, gutting out a 2-0 decision over Chandler Reilford of Tremont to capture fifth at 220 pounds. Thomas started the day with a pin of Damien Anderson of Cumberland, but fell to Caden Flanders of PORTA by fall in the next round.

He would then beat Mason Reed of Knoxville by fall at the 3:33 mark to set up the match with Reilford for fifth.

Litchfield’s fifth medal came at 113 pounds, where Blake Zumwalt finished eighth. Zumwalt would defeat Bryant Weber of Cumberland by fall at 1:13, then lost to Jake Schwartz of Carlinville, Oscar Young of Knoxville and Jake Lieb of PORTA to finish eighth.

In addition to the five medalists, the Panthers would also send Korbe Hoover and Seth Kenter to PORTA, who wrestled at 120 and 152 pounds respectively.

Litchfield will be closer to home for their next match as they take on Hillsboro and Mt. Olive on the Wildcats’ home mats on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
