William O. Sumpter, 82

William Otto Sumpter, 82, of Atwater, formerly of Litchfield, died on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, at 8:30 p.m. at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 28, beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jake Wetterlin, of St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield, officiating. Burial will be held in Bethel Ridge Cemetery in Atwater.

Mr. Sumpter was born June 3, 1937, to Norman William and Vera Christine (Jackson) Sumpter. He married Josephine Elizabeth “Betty” (Sendig) on Aug. 17, 1958, at St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield, and she survives.

He graduated from Carlinville High School with the class of 1955. During his career, he was a self-employed farmer and won a State Farmer Award for his achievements. He also drove a fuel truck for Wolff Oil Company for several years and owned and operated a Service Station in Litchfield on the corner of State and Union Avenue.

Mr. Sumpter was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield, the Litchfield Boat and Ski Club, the Montgomery County Repulications and was past president of the Litchfield Jaycees. He served as auxiliary policeman with the Litchfield Police Department, served as a fourth ward alderman for several years, as well as a precinct committeeman,  and was part of the Litchfield Beautification that planted crab apple trees on Union Avenue and State Street. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, David Sumpter of Litchfield; sister, Norma “Jean” Chism of Chesterfield; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Craig) Rimar, Steven (Britanie) Sumpter, Kristina (Josh) Waggoner, Daniel (Sarah) Sumpter, Jonathan (Kimberly) Sumpter and Samantha (Dennis) Hamilton; 12 great-grandchildren, Madison, Molly and Morgan Rimar, Nora, Hannah and Brooklynn Sumpter, Eli and Isaak Waggoner and Zoey, Dennis IV and Olivia Hamilton; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Lucky.

Mr. Sumpter was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan Sumpter-Zoschke; brother, David Sumpter; and sister, Sharon Dittmer.
