Zala Alice Meyer, 84

Zala Alice Meyer, 84, of Hillsboro died on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019 at 7:35 p.m. at Hillsboro Area Hospital.

Family and friends are invited to attend an informal memorial service Saturday, Jan. 18, beginning at 1 p.m. at The Abbey on Broad in Hillsboro, 202 South Broad Street. Cremation rites were accorded. Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home assisted the family.

Ms. Meyer was born on Dec. 9, 1935, in Coffeen, to Jerome and May (Gaines) Malloy. She graduated from Coffeen High School in 1953, and married Denver C. Meyer that same year.

She began her married life working as a farmers wife, before moving to Hillsboro in 1961 and raising four children.  She later divorced,  and earned her LPN at Capitol Area Vocational Center. Ms. Meyer worked at Hillsboro Hospital, area nursing homes and Graham Correctional Center Medical Unit, where she worked for 22 years before retiring.

Ms. Meyer had a large, close-knit extended family and enjoyed them all. She loved to attend the countless get togethers they held. In addition to her four children, she wrangled all of the neighborhood kids that hung out with her children. She was an Eastern Star member. In her spare time, she enjoyed music, traveling with friends and family, reading and puzzles.

Ms. Meyer is survived by her children, Daniel Dean (Jackie) Meyer of Hillsboro, Lloyd Alan Meyer of Hillsboro, Douglas Kent (Diana Casey) Meyer of Coffeen  and Miki Malloy (Eric) Smoot  of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Luke (Kim) Meyer, Jessie (Jamie) Hatfield and Cody Meyer; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary May Mansfield of Brighton and Lila (Arthur) Mazzier of Wheaton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Kyle Meyer; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Meyer; and four brothers, Drexel Malloy, Carl T. Malloy, Carroll Malloy and Durrel J. Malloy.
