Betty M. Haberer, 91, of Pocahontas, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020, at Cedarhurst Memory Care in Greenville.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. COVID-19 recommendations will be followed, and everyone is required to wear masks and social distance.

A private Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 21, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Pocahontas with the Rev. Father Paul Bonk officiating. Private interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Pierron. Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland is assisting the family.

Mrs. Haberer was born May 21, 1929, in Sorento, the daughter of Charles and Mae (Mollett) Starnes. She and William M. Haberer were married by Father Kunsch on Jan. 28, 1950, at Immaculate Conception Church in Pierron, and her husband survives.

Born at home in Sorento, she attended Sorento School and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1946. She attended Greenville College, and taught at Smith School in Sorento. She worked at DeMoulin’s in Greenville, and was also a babysitter.

A member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Pocahontas and the church’s Altar Society, she enjoyed ballroom dancing and the Polka. She and her husband traveled to all 50 states with their children and grandchildren. She loved to bake. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her life.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by twin daughters, Deborah L. (Keith Murray) Williams of Glen Carbon and Denise L. (Michael) Taylor of Wasilla, AK; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Dragusica, David A. Goodall, Shawn M. (Sherry) Taylor, Benjamin L. (Stephanie) Goodall, Danny W. Haberer, Shanelle B. (Dan) Vannoy, Jessie Hankins and Josie (Jeremy) Beard; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Taylor, Blaine, Jayden, Leighton, Owen, Jarron, Kiera, Brooklyn, Dylan, Trentyn, Ashley and Audrey; stepgreat-grandchildren, Tessa, James, Alayna, Ledger and Lyden; brother, Delmar D. (Virginia) Starnes of Pocahontas; sister, Judy (Mac) Fitzgerald of Chattanooga, TN; and sisters-in-law, Harriet Starnes of Bethalto and Betty Kombrink of Millersburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by father-in-law, William C. Haberer, mother-in-law, Sylvia E. Haberer-Kleber; son, Daniel L. Haberer; grandchild, Dennis Beard; brothers, Charles I. Starnes and Roy (Mae) Starnes, Larry L. Starnes and Johnny L. Starnes in infancy; brothers-in-law, Calvin C. Haberer, August “Gus” Komink, Erwin Liening and Tom Brown; sisters-in-law, Helen M. Haberer and Patricia A. Liening-Brown.

Memorials may be made to St. Nicholas Catholic Church for masses or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
