Margie “Marge” Deffenbaugh, 93, of Chatham, died on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025, at her home.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to services. A memorial gathering and ceremony was held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at Butler Funeral Home in Chatham. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Deffenbaugh was born on Sept. 27, 1931, in Sorento, the daughter of Albert and Virginia (Sloan) Reed. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949 and attended Eastern Illinois University, Blackburn, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, earning a master’s degree.
Mrs. Deffenbaugh went on to work as an English teacher for Carlinville High School and college. She directed many plays, was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, solving crossword puzzles and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals.
Mrs. Deffenbaugh is survived by her children, Jude (Steve) Jones of O’Fallon, MO, Robert (Meloney) Deffenbaugh of Chatham, and Rebecca Hunt of Springfield; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Deffenbaugh was preceded in death by her parents; son, Christopher Deffenbaugh; and five brothers.
