Andrew “Drew” Douglas, 77, died July 29, 2025, at his home in Cortez, FL.
As per his request, his ashes were spread in the waters he loved on what would have been his 78th birthday.
Mr. Douglas was born on Jan. 17, 1948, the eldest child of Dr. William T. and Rosemary Douglas. He grew up in Hillsboro, attending grade school and junior high in Hillsboro before attending Thomas Jefferson High School in St. Louis, MO. He was a charter class member at New College in Sarasota, FL, earning a degree in marine biology and later completed a master’s degree in journalism at American University in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Douglas served in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne in Vietnam 1968-69 and was awarded a Bronze Star. His career in journalism included positions at The Sarasota Herald Tribune, The St. Petersburg Times, Congressional Quarterly and the Bureau of National Affairs.
As an avid sailor, Mr. Douglas was the captain of many vessels over the years and enjoyed fishing the gulf waters in his free time. He was a dog-lover, a consummate story teller and a true gentleman.
Mr. Douglas is survived by his daughter, Genevieve (Michael) and granddaughter Giselle; son, Ian; and his siblings, Mary Neal and Robert Douglas.
