Charles O. Herman, Jr., 96, of Coffeen died Monday, May 25, 2015, at 3:25 a.m. at Montgomery Nursing & Rehab Center in Taylor Springs.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral Mass will be said Thursday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro with Father Dan Willenborg, pastor of St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis, officiant.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Coffeen. Military Rites will be held at graveside by V.F.W. Post #1306 and American Legion Post #425.
Mr. Herman was born on Feb. 8, 1919, in Litchfield, the son of the late Charles Otto and Theresa (Schwab) Herman. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Lovein on Aug. 19, 1948, in Macon, GA, and she survives in Coffeen.
He lived in the Coffeen area most of his life, was a graduate of Hillsboro High School and attended Brown Business College for two years. He served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in Europe, and was awarded a Bronze Battle Star.
Mr. Herman farmed and was an electrician. He loved to garden, tend to his flowers, woodworking and working with stained glass. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Coffeen and IL/St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Sharyn (husband Michael) Ellison of Savannah, GA, Charles "Chuck" (wife Cheryl) Herman of Coffeen and Robin (husband Lon) Lyons of Peoria; six grandchildren, Jennifer (husband Mike) Kershaw of Coffeen, Heather (husband Mark) Bellaver of Hillsboro, Jared Lyons of St. Louis, Tyler Lyons of Peoria, Chad (wife Jenna) Edwards of Marine and Drew (wife Beth) Edwards of Hillsboro; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne P. "Butch" (wife Georgia) Herman of Lindenhurst.
Besides his parents, Mr. Herman was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin Herman, Eugene Herman and Joseph Herman.
Memorials may be made to the Coffeen Volunteer Fire Department.
