Ena Marie Hughes Hemken, 97, of Litchfield, formerly of Witt, IL, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at 4:48 p.m. at Heritage Manor in Litchfield.

Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in  Hillsboro. Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jeff Hemken, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro, officiating.

Burial will take place in Witt Cemetery in Witt.

Mrs. Hemken was born on Sept. 15, 1919, in Bridgeport, the daughter of the late John Vernon and Alta Cecil (Foster) Abernathy.  She married George W. Hughes on Sept. 28, 1940, in St. Charles, MO, and he preceded her in death in 1978.  She then married Maynard Hemken in 1986, and he preceded her in death in 1992.

She was a housewife who enjoyed making lap blankets for veterans, quilting, singing at church, dancing, crocheting and playing Bingo.

Mrs. Hemken was a member of Taylor Springs Baptist Church in Taylor Springs and the Old Settler's Honor Society. During her lifetime she lived in Witt, Litchfield and Montgomery County.

She is survived by two sons, Bob (wife Bev) Hughes of O’Fallon, IL,  and John (wife Sybil) Hughes of Orange, TX; six daughters, Marjory (husband Herb) Lakin of Huntington Beach, CA, Nancy Shipman of Hillsboro, Janice (husband James) Crabtree of Litchfield, Barb (husband Sam) Whitlow of Hillsboro, Alta (husband John) Lovsey of Sawyerville and Helen (husband Brad) Saxby of Litchfield; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husbands, Mrs. Hemken was preceded in death by three brothers, John Vernon Abernathy, Jr., Delbert Eugene Abernathy and Charles Franklin Abernathy.
