Merrill Allen Wernsing, 88, of Raymond died Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at 3:30 a.m. in his home.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield with the Rev. James Ritter officiating.

Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery in Raymond.

Mr. Wernsing was born on Dec. 7, 1926, in Hillsboro, the son of the late Roy and Anna (Hamlin) Wernsing. He married Virginia Ann Schneider on April 4, 1954, at Fairview Methodist Church in Nokomis, and she survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He graduated from Raymond High School with the class of 1945. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield and participated in Men's Club while attending Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.

Mr. Wernsing was also a member of Litchfield Boat and Ski Club, American Legion Post #299 in Raymond and the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, skiing and bowling. He was self-employed as a lifelong farmer in Raymond.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Lyndell (Connie) Wernsing of Raymond and Theron (Ann) Wernsing of Carlinville; one daughter, Alicia (Douglas) Grosenheider of Litchfield; one brother, Halden Wernsing of Harvel; one sister, Karen (David) Bayer of Ladue, MO; seven grandchildren, Brant Wernsing of Litchfield, Whittney Wernsing of Charleston, SC, Brandy O'Malley of Nokomis, Hillary and Jenna Wernsing of Carlinville and Shayla and Cole Grosenheider of Litchfield.

The family suggests memorials to the Montgomery County Cancer Association, Montgomery Breast Cancer Support Group or Zion Lutheran School in Litchfield.
