Mr. Carter died at 10:10 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014, at the Springfield Memorial Medical Center after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.

He was born on April 30, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Joseph D. Carter and Florence (Thomas) Carter Finn. In 1960 he and Reyesitas "Linda" Baros were married in San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, in St. John's Catholic Church. His wife survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Ron Carter of Lucasville, Ohio, Michael (Joleen) Carter of Guthrie, OK, and Roy (Lori) Carter, Jr., of Springfield; two daughters, Tina (Ken) Tilashalski of Hoover, AL, and Karen (Greg) Harrop of Chesterfield, MO; eleven grandchildren, Monica and Michael Carter, Olivia and Colton Carter, Carter, Hunter Ann, Cole, and Chase Tilashalski , and Anthony, John, and Emma Harrop; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene (Judy) Carter of Park Ridge and Robert Carter of Fairview, Ohio; and one sister, Eleanor (Tom) Adkins of Avon, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents preceded him in death.

As a seventeen year-old, Mr. Carter began a typesetting apprenticeship at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Because he wanted to travel, he became a Tramp printer as he worked in over 100 different newspapers and print shops throughout the country.

After years of life on the road (and in his Airstream trailer) he settled in Espanola, N.M., to start the Master Printing Company. He later came to Illinois, to Springfield to run Hamann the Printer. Later he established the Carter Printing Company in Farmersville, from which he retired five years ago.

Memorials in his name should be directed to the Farmersville/Waggoner Volunteer Ambulance Service.
