John Arthur "Art" Evans, 94, of Springfield, MO, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, after a short illness. Survivors include a brother, Morgan "Jiggs" Evans, Jr. of Fillmore.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Greenlawn (North) Funeral Home, Springfield, MO.

He was born Sept. 20, 1915 in St. Louis, son of Morgan and Lydia Louise (Understall) Evans. He married Gladys Irene Harris on Jan. 31, 1947 and they recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. She survives.

Evans served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pekin during the Great Depression. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1939, where he served with his brother Kenneth in Anchorage and Nome, AK. He was honorably discharged in 1945. After working one year with the Army Corps of Engineers, he served 29 years with the U.S. Geological Survey as a surveyor and field cartographer.

He is survived by brothers, James W. "Tip" Evans of Humboldt, Morgan "Jiggs" Evans, Jr. of Fillmore, and Robert M. Evans of Carlinville; two sons, Jon Paul (wife, Julie) Evans of Corona, CA, and Kevin Ray (wife, Nancy) Evans of Springfield, MO; two grandsons, Chad Arthur Evans of Belvidere, and Randall Keith Evans of Corona, CA.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, S1C Paul Anthony Evans, KIA-U.S.S. Arizona, and Kenneth "Gabby" Evans; and sisters, Ruth (Evans) Kirkman and Ann (Evans) Mutka.
